Bono, Jay Z, Chris Martin, Madonna perform at Haiti quake fundraiser

Jay-Z, Madonna, Bono, Chris Martin and Rihanna were amongst the major stars who performed at a George Clooney organised benefit concert for the Haiti earthquake victims last night (January 22).

Julia Roberts and Brad Pitt were also in attendance during the two-hour Hope for Haiti telethon which was broadcast on all major US TV channels, on YouTube and many other websites and on MTV in the UK. It was also broadcast on Haiti's Radio One.

"At the core of every religion is the belief that we care for one another, we take care of each other especially in times of need," said Clooney. "The Haitian people need our help, they need to know they're not alone, they need to know that we still care."

An estimated 1.5 million people have been left homeless by the 7.0-magnitude quake. At present the death toll is thought to be 110,000.

During the show, Beyonce sang 'Halo', accompanied on the piano by Chris Martin.

She changed the lyrics, and sang "Haiti we can see your halo, we pray you won't fade away".

Jay Z debuted a new song, 'Stranded (Haiti Mon Amour) with U2's Bono and The Edge and Rihanna.

More than 100 Hollywood and music stars took part. Some of them, including director Steven Spielberg and Stevie Wonder, manned the phones and took donations from the public.

Clint Eastwood, Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman, Robert De Niro, Matt Damon, Denzel Washington, Daniel Craig and Jack Nicholson were amongst the other names rounded up by Clooney. Bruce Springsteen, Wyclef Jean and Mary J Blige also performed.

Madonna, who performed 'Like A Prayer' during the show, donated $250,000 (£155,000), Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie gave $1m (£620,000) while supermodel Giselle Bundchen gave $1.5m (£0.93m). Clooney himself donated another $1m.

As well as donations from viewers, more money will be raised through the sale of songs performed on the show, via iTunes.
